Generally, in itself an expression of virtual reality is absurd. Man recognizes that something exists, but calls it something imaginary, unreal. It’s like half agree. Ridiculous. And as always. People recognize that God exists, but no one saw. He Virtual. Funny? Therefore more accurate to call this reality digital or somewhere else. And all would be nothing, just a word game, if such a definition is not left a mark on the tone and meaning. The reality – a reality, just look at it can be from different sides. And it is always interesting to discover new qualities and properties of the same things. Just look at them from another angle. Let’s look at the world of modern computer online games in different ways.

Online games. What to choose?

Today, there are thousands of online games, and every day there are new. How do I read in this ocean of entertainment and to pick up the game for his soul? With so many offers to get confused quite easily. And not to make unnecessary mistakes, must be clearly defined for itself: what it is you want? First, what kind of games do you like? This can be action games or simulation, or arcade RPG. Sort games by genre, we are gradually approaching the goal, sweeping a heap of rubbish, which offers a worldwide network here and there, resplendent with colorful banners. Thus, the bulk of all online game belongs to the genre RPG (role-playing game). The key word in the acronym Role – role. Play a role. That is what every day we are engaged in everyday life. So why not try to do this in the virtual:) space? There are no restrictions, as in real life, no consequences. Oh if you’d like to do something bad, then the best option and you will not find. All online games in general and RPGs in particular can be divided into two broad categories:

1. Browser. To play these games, you need only internet access and browser software (Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla Firefox, etc.). If you have limited traffic, disk space or you just do not want to clog your computer junk, it will be the best option. Usually these games are easy to master and control, good graphics do not differ, and therefore not demanding of computer resources. For holders of feeble rental property is in the selection of games could be decisive. The benefits of such games may also include the ability to play from any computer that respects the above conditions ( ‘Net and browser), and today these machines have a majority. The first browser-based online games were purely textual. But technology does not stand still, and now a host of games, using technology raster video or Flash. For simplicity and relatively low levels of required performance added a nice picture. It is worth noting that the only condition for correct operation of Flash games is a fast Internet connection.

2. Client. This is a game requiring additional client software. This distribution is the game you want to install (and in some cases, simply overwrite) on your computer. Most of these client programs are not sold in stores, video games and they need to download from the network. The size distribution can take from a few megabytes to several gigabytes. It would be logical to assume that the greater part of the installation, the game is better and more interesting to the same graphical capabilities of the product increased in proportion to its size. However, it is not always the case. It is not rare, are typical cases where the client is pumped in a couple of gigs in weight, and then we find an ugly interface, weak schedule, but the game play in general the question. To guard against such unfair developers need to carefully examine all available information about the game. View screenshots, read the reviews, find out the number of people permanently residing on the server. Game play, interface, graphics, and genre to your taste. In addition, you should pay attention to the company of the developer. There are various brands that produce quality products. But all the rules there are exceptions and there are examples where high-quality online products create simple enthusiasts who collect their own community spaces on the network and implement ideas. An example of such a development could be a stalker online, which was originally developed by amateurs.

Whichever game you did not choose for themselves, a browser or client, or another RPG genre, carefully examine all available information and feedback from users, and only then you will be ensured a good time in the company of the world.

In a sign of the retail industry’s resilience in IT spending, Michaels Stores Inc. is implementing JDA Software Group Inc.’s JDA Portfolio advanced forecasting and replenishment software to boost sales and inventory turns.

The deal is good news for JDA, which failed to meet financial expectations in its most recent quarter after hanging tough through much of the IT spending downturn.

Michaels, a $2.5 billion company, has used JDA’s Advanced Warehouse Replenishment by E3 for eight years to optimize its inventory replenishment. The company will now integrate JDA’s Advanced Store Replenishment by E3 and Network Optimization by E3 to manage its product/store combinations while centralizing store-level replenishment.

Such functions are critical at Michaels, which currently has more than 700 stores and plans to expand to more than 1,000. Each store has 35,000 to 40,000 SKUs. That means its systems need to support as many as 40 million store/SKU combinations, so scalability was a critical consideration.

Michaels is currently deploying Advanced Store Replenishment. Following acceptance testing, it will conduct a pilot program involving five stores in the fourth quarter of this year. By spring of next year, the company’s remaining stores are scheduled to begin going live, with all stores scheduled to be on the system within 18 months of initial rollout.

Once rollout of Store Replenishment is complete, Michaels will deploy Network Optimization.

Microsoft gave a two-year status report on its .NET strategy in a much-anticipated briefing today, highlighted by the first release candidate of its .NET Server and several other advances in its Web services strategy.

The big picture point-of-view coming out of Redmond today is that .NET has flourished out of the gate in some areas, such as the delivery of Visual Studio .NET, which put Web services-development tools into developer hands. But Microsoft CEO Bill Gates also admitted Microsoft has stumbled very publicly in others areas, such as the company’s decision to pull back on its .NET My Services roll-out.

Overall, he gave his company a grade of “C” in its initial Web services efforts.

Indeed, Microsoft is taking some big hits from analysts and media, such as a story in today’s Wall Street Journal arguing that .NET has largely been a bust (registration required).

Certainly, the .NET rollout has been a mixed bag. But such highly-critical analysis largely miss or minimize the importance of Web services and related technologies within the enterprise, not to mention the wide adoption of its concepts almost universally among technology vendors.

Into this confused environment, Microsoft Wednesday launched some actual product?an important step in moving from Web services vision to reality.

Microsoft said its Windows .NET Server has reached the stage of release candidate 1, which means that engineering, development and beta testing has been completed and is nearing final release. Windows .NET server code will be available for download for third-party vendors this week and for customers next.

Jim Allchin, group vice president of the Platforms Group at Microsoft called .NET Server, which has suffered from numerous delays, “rock-solid.”

It had better be. Microsoft has taken many hits for the failure to keep its public Web sites and Web services?such as at its HotMail and MSN services?up and running while its Web server and e-mail clients have been the target of a slew of malicious viruses and attacks.

Windows .NET server will be the server operating system for the .NET framework and be tightly integrated into the company’s tools and applications. In addition to deeper, native Web services support, .NET Server will include expanded support for 64-bit processing, broader inclusion of eight-way clustering, and support for non-uniform memory access (NUMA).

In a related development today, Microsoft and Covalent Technologies announced a deal to more closely link Microsoft’s .NET platforms to the popular Apache Web server. The recently released Apache 2.0 was that group’s first real effort to create a Windows-based Web server. Now, users of Microsoft’s Visual Studio .Net development tools will be able to deploy apps to Apache Web servers using .NET’s ASP.Net dynamic page-creation engine.

Corio will manage Homestead’s application through the Corio Full Service delivery model, which includes infrastructure and application-management services for a fixed monthly fee.

Homestead, recently acquired by private investment bank The Blackstone Group, is required to re-deploy HR and financial systems from its former parent and build independent IT capabilities. The systems to be managed by Corio handle hotel back office data for the company’s 111 properties and 17,000 rooms in the United States. Property-management offices use the Web-based systems to submit invoices, enter time worked, and transmit new-hire information.

Corio will use its FastLane methodology to upgrade Homestead’s human-resources system and to move both human resources and financials to a new platform at Corio data centers.

Electronics e-marketplace and software provider E2open said Tuesday it is working with member IBM to flesh out requirements for doing Web services-based integration in the electronics industry.

The two also announced plans for developing off-the-shelf Web services products for the industry, based on IBM’s WebSphere application server platform. The products are expected later this year.

Web services and supply-chain marketplaces intersect in intriguing ways. The major headache for supply chains — including hosted e-marketplaces — is trading partner integration, especially smaller companies unable to afford large-scale integration platforms.

Web services promise to democratize integration with open interfaces and possibly lower-cost, commoditized implementations.

Vendors like IBM have also been focusing their integration products much more on vertical markets, recognizing that different industries have different business process requirements and even standards that need supporting.

E2open recognizes the opportunity, citing a dire need for industry integration to improve inventory turns and reduce cycle times. But the costs for such systems has been “prohibitive,” said Greg Clark, E2open COO and CTO.

E2open delivers network-based services for integrating trading partners, improving product sourcing, enabling product development collaboration, and more.

E2open and IBM have worked together in the past. The two built a UDDI-based business process directory for the high-tech industry. E2open has also worked with IBM’s Tivoli division to deliver security and management solutions for its members.

E2open members include Acer, Hitachi, IBM, LG Electronics, Lucent Technologies, Matsushita Electric (Panasonic), Nortel Networks, Seagate Technology, Solectron, and Toshiba.

Analysts had been expecting earnings of 4 cents per share; the company’s stock shot up 13 percent, to $11.83 in early morning trading.

Net income when charges were factored in was $3.5 million or 3 cents per share, compared to a net loss of $7.5 million or 7 cents per share one year ago.

Revenue was roughly flat, at $223.6 million vs. $221.9 million one year ago. One of the most positive indicators in the report: License fees grew 23 percent sequentially, to $54.1 million, supplying evidence that IT organizations are still spending on projects deemed critical to their companies’ business strategies.

Intel Corp. on Thursday introduced a software development toolkit to let commercial software developers and IT organizations develop applications that support RosettaNet e-business standards.

RosettaNet is a non-profit organization that has developed a number of Partner Interface Processes (PIPs) defining ways that companies can exchange data and execute transactions in standard formats. Intel is a major backer of RosettaNet and conducts RosettaNet-based transactions with about 60 of its own trading partners.

The Intel Architecture Software Development Kit for RosettaNet includes support for RosettaNet PIPs for order management, new order transactions, and shipment confirmation transactions, said Colin Evans, director of distributed systems at Intel Labs.

The company’s objective is to facilitate fast development of RosettaNet applications by small and mid-size businesses that might otherwise struggle to commit financial and other resources to transact via RosettaNet standards.

“We felt the biggest impact to the ecosystem was to make it more broadly available,” Evans said, explaining that the toolkit is available on an open-source basis from the RosettaNet Web site.

The software works with Intel 32-bit and 64-bit client and server processors, as well as with Microsoft Corp.’s Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems.
